Workshop tool

SMART goals

Use this when you are turning activities into work packages and need clear, attainable goals that all partners agree on.

Where it’s used:Step 5: Work packages

How to use it

For each activity or work package, ask some of the following questions in your core partner group. You can also come up with your own; just make sure you dive deep into all five areas.

  • S: Specific. Get to the core of what you're aiming for.
    • What specifically needs to be done?
    • What steps need to be taken?
    • What milestones do you need to reach along the way?
    • Should the activity be subdivided?
  • M: Measurable. Track progression.
    • What is the measure of success?
    • How will you know when the activity is finished?
    • How will you track milestones?
    • How will you report to the project manager?
  • A: Assignable. Look at your team.
    • Who is responsible?
    • Can they achieve it on their own?
    • Should the activity be split between partners? Who takes the lead?
  • R: Relevant/Realistic. Give yourself a reality check.
    • Include all involved stakeholders; don't set unrealistic goals for others.
    • Can your team reasonably accomplish it?
    • Is it necessary? Why?
    • Is it high or low priority?
    • Could your time be better spent elsewhere?
  • T: Time-bound. Agree on timing.
    • When should the activity start?
    • When should it be finished?
    • Which milestones should be reached when?
